Andrew Franklin launched Profile Books “on April Fool’s Day in 1996” to “publish stimulating non-fiction in a wide range of fields, including history, business and economics, science and biography, with a sprinkling of humour.” The house’s long list of bestsellers includes Alan Bennett (his most recent bestseller, Lady in the Van has sold over 160,000 copies on Neilsen Bookscan), Mary Beard, Simon Garfield’s Just My Type and Lynne Truss’s Eats, Shoots and Leaves which sold more than three million copies worldwide.  In 2007 Profile Books acquired Serpent’s Tail, whose successes include We Need to Talk about Kevin (over 900,000 copies sold) and in 2014 We Are Completely Beside Ourselves, with 800,000 copies sold.  In 2015, a Tuskar Rock book, Seiobo There Below by László Krasznahorkai, won the Man Booker International Prize. Profile Books is based in London, and publishes around 120 books a year, and has 40 employees.

Before Profile he was a director of Penguin Books for six years and ran Hamish Hamilton.  He began his booktrade career as an assistant bookseller at Hatchards Bookshop in London.

Andrew was a trustee and board member of the Edinburgh International Book Festival from 2005-2014 and still chairs events at the festival every year.  He is on the board of a number of charities and writes articles for the national press on books and publishing regularly.
